On November 26, in Vienna's Donaustadt district, firefighters responding to a call discovered the body of a young man in a burned-out Mercedes car. The extremely brutal nature of the crime indicated a high level of motivation and hatred toward the victim. Austrian police later confirmed that the victim was the son of Ukrainian politician Danylo Kuzmin.
An analysis of digital transactions revealed that a significant amount of money had disappeared from the victim's crypto wallet. Investigators found that shortly before his death, the victim had made several transactions, and then the wallet had been accessed by third parties.
According to preliminary data, the young man may have been attacked in the underground parking lot of the hotel where he was staying, and then the unconscious man or his body was moved to a car.
The investigation is considering several versions of the crime, as it is obvious that this was an attempt to cover up the traces of a premeditated murder, motivated by financial gain, by setting fire to the car. The autopsy showed that death occurred before the car caught fire.
In addition, surveillance cameras and the suspects' routes helped to quickly establish their identities. They are two Ukrainian citizens aged 19 and 45. After committing the crime in Vienna, they quickly left Austria and returned to their homeland, where they were detained by Ukrainian law enforcement. The court imposed a preventive measure in the form of detention.
The fact that the deceased was the son of a high-ranking official attracted particular public attention, but the authorities are trying to avoid politicizing the incident. At the same time, there have been speculations in the media about the possible involvement of Russian nationals in the crime, but the official authorities have not yet confirmed this version.
The death of 21-year-old Ukrainian Danylo Kuzmin, the son of the deputy mayor of Kharkiv, was one of the most high-profile events of late 2025. There are many digital traces in the case: transactions, telephone data, video camera recordings. Austria and Ukraine are coordinating their efforts to gather further evidence.
The tragedy in Vienna is a story about how modern crimes increasingly combine old methods (violence, arson) with new digital technologies (cryptocurrency). This, in turn, confirms how important cooperation between states is in establishing the truth. After all, society expects justice to be served.
